Imou is a “consumer wing” from Dahua, a large Chinese manufacturer of CCTV and surveillance equipment. They describe their new Ranger IQ as “the world’s first artificial Internet of Things (AIoT) security camera”.

The 3.6mm lens has an 87 ° horizontal field of view and an attractive dark sphere shape (approx. 9cm x 9cm x 10cm) allows this indoor camera to rotate 355 degrees and tilt 90 degrees for full coverage, so get rid of blind spots that even the widest angle cameras can't beat.

2 megapixels (1920 x 1080) - 30 frames per second / SD recording / 87 ° lens / night range up to 10 m / built-in speaker and microphone - bidirectional sound transmission / motion detection, adjustable range / rotating PAN +

  • 2 megapixels
  • 100% better compression than H.264
  • IR range up to 10m
  • Fixed lens 3.6 mm
  • Internal memory
  • Audio input / output

Product Details

The wireless car camera with 360-degree rotation when motion is detected is powered via micro USB and has a network adapter with a usable long cable. (The battery power accessory is this cable). As usual these days when you connect the setting, it is finished with the mobile app. The Imou Life app is available for iOS and Android.

When looking for a place for the camera, it is worth noting that it cannot be tilted below the horizontal plane if it is installed in the standard table configuration. So if you want to be able to see a lot directly under the unit, you will need to use the included wall / ceiling bracket instead.

Properties

The Sony Starlight sensor provides a 1080p image and allows the camera to grip color images in low light conditions before automatically switching to black and white when things really get dark. Support for H.264 and a newer H.265 codec is available, which means less space is required to record.

There is a privacy mask setting that wraps the lens to the bottom of the case and completely closes the view.

The built-in speaker and microphone allow the use of a two-way chat unit between someone in the room and the user in the app.

The built-in abnormal sound detector is used to report events, such as smoke alarms (see video below).

In addition to the built-in 802.11b / g / n wireless network, there is also the option of using a 100Mbps Ethernet port for a reliable connection. Power consumption is estimated at <9.5 W.

Artificial intelligence

The true wit of this camera is equipped with built-in human intelligence detection software that automatically recognizes human targets and tracks them by automatically moving the lens to track them around the room.

This ability to differentiate between humans and pets or spiders, for example, is designed to save you from unnecessary false alarms and notifications.

Imou Ranger IQ

We’ve found that it works well, provided you don’t get too close to the lens or if you don’t move past it too quickly. The sound of the engines moving the lens is audible, but by no means loud, and it’s nice to see it picking up people and following them.

Saving recordings

The Ranger IQ requires a Cloud connection to work and there’s a subscription service for storing your recordings online.

IMou cloud storage costs for 2020

You can however choose to store your recordings locally on an SD card (256GB maximum). It’s great to see that the last 2 cameras we’ve reviewed now both have local storage options, it seems manufacturers are finally listening.

Although the camera cannot be viewed in the browser, you can send the images to an Onvif-compatible NAS, etc. (Also compatible with ONVIF PTZ service controls).

Integration

IMOU Ranger IQ - Alexa in Google Assistant

This camera is compatible with home assistants such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

It also tells us that a series of compatible “Airfly” motion detectors, sirens and door sensors will be launched later this year. Airfly is Imou’s proprietary 433/868 / 915MHz protocol, and the Ranger IQ has a built-in Airfly gateway to connect to these additional sensors.
